Title:Grand Forks Data Collection and Archival Study - Phase II
End Date:March 2015
Status:Completed
Keywords:Autoscope, data collection, East Grand Forks, Grand Forks, traffic analysis application, traffic collection

Abstract

ATAC was contacted by the Grand Forks - East Grand Forks MPO with regards to extending the use of existing traffic detection cameras for traffic data collection and archival. The City of Grand Forks had approximately 43 intersections where Autoscope cameras were being used for traffic signal actuation purposes. A total of 31 intersections were able to be set to count traffic volumes. In addition, a traffic analysis application was developed to process the data collected at intersections by the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute (UGPTI) DOT Support Center (DOTSC) IT department. The application uses the ADT and 15-minute databases to create: graphs - volume profile, monthly seasonal factors, day-of-the-week seasonal factors and turning movement counts - peak hour volume/factor, annual average daily traffic (AADT), monthly average daily traffic (MADT), and average daily traffic (ADT). The collected traffic volumes were compared to manual counts at each intersection by lane group per approach. It was concluded that the data accuracy observed appears to fall well within acceptable ranges of accuracy and reports created by the traffic analysis application can be used for transportation network optimization and quantitative analysis. From the continuing successes of Phase II, there will be additional work in setting up Grand Forks traffic detection cameras and developing the traffic analysis application.
