National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA)

The interaction and effects of NEPA with national environmental policy; and its implementation will be the focus of the presentation. To include NEPA's principle elements and the mandates that follow.

We will cover the different levels of NEPA compliance. To include categorical exclusions and environmental assessments. The majority of the lecture will be centered on the most complex level of NEPA compliance which is the environmental impact statement (EIS).

An overview of the detailed process of creating and implementing an EIS will be presented. Additionally, we will cover "roles and responsibilities" of all parties involved.

Brian P. Kalk, Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute – NDSU

Brian P. Kalk is an associate research fellow with the Military Logistics Program, Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute. He received his M.S. in Environmental Engineering and PhD in Natural Resource Management from North Dakota State.

He currently instructs a variety of courses for North Dakota State and previously served as the Environmental Compliance Officer for Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California.
