Alternative Fuel Use and Regulations in the Mountain Plains Region: An Overview

The objective of this study is to provide an overview of alternative fuel use and potential in the Mountain Plains Region (MPR) as well as a benefit/cost case study for switching from traditional to an alternative fuel (E85) in the region. The presentation describes alternative fuel trends in the MPR as well as alternative fuel policy mandates in the region. Included will be a comparison of existing alternative fuels and related effects for ND, SD, MT, WY, CO and UT as well as potential for production and use. A brief description of the costs associated with switching from traditional gasoline to E85 related to a North Dakota State University case study will be included.

Tamara VanWechel, Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute – NDSU

Tamara completed her M.S. degree in Natural Resources Management with an Agribusiness and Applied Economics emphasis from North Dakota State University. She has worked in the UGPTI's Agriculture Transport Center, and is now focusing her research in the Rural Transportation Safety and Security Center. Tamara was born and raised in rural North Dakota, and understands the fundamental relationship between economics and agriculture, as well as the traffic safety problems that are dominant in rural areas. She is pleased to be working on such a diverse mix of issues and hopes to have a positive influence in these areas.
