Transportation Safety and Security Conference Set for August 23-24 in Bismarck

A North Dakota Rural Transportation Safety and Security Conference is scheduled for August 23-24 in Bismarck. The conference is aimed at emergency planners and responders, transportation agencies and private transportation firms. The conference will identify and increase awareness of the safety and security risks in the state and region.

North Dakota Governor John Hoeven and Senator Kent Conrad are scheduled to address the conference and provide a state and federal overview of transportation safety and security. The Rural Transportation Safety and Security Center, a new center that is part of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at North Dakota State University, will be highlighted and the center's vision and goals will be outlined.

Representatives from the Federal Highway Administration, the North Dakota Department of Transportation, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the North Dakota Transportation Security Administration and North Dakota State University will make comments or lead discussions.

Key topics include:

  • A federal perspective for a strategic highway safety plan
  • An outline of rural road safety goals
  • A snapshot of North Dakota highway safety efforts
  • Motor carrier safety research, technology and direction
  • An overview of U.S./Canadian transportation security and safety issues

In addition, the conference also features panel discussions on those topics featuring local, state and federal transportation and emergency response officials.

Public officials involved in safety, security and transportation are invited to attend, as well as those involved with city and regional planning councils, law enforcement, insurance, logistics, transit and freight service or anyone interested in transportation safety and security.

The conference is sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, North Dakota Department of Transportation, and the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute and North Dakota State University.

The conference fee is $50 before August 11, and $85 following that day. Participants can register online or by mail.
