Abstract

This report covers the first year of a two-year study of unpaved roads. Maintenance and reconstruction models of unpaved roads are reviewed. These models are based upon empirical and mechanistic methods, and they have the objective of evaluating deterioration, roughness propagation parameters, scraping maintenance, surface material loss, surface material selection, and surface thickness. Unfortunately, most models require an extensive database of road material properties to establish the values of coefficients in the model formulas. The transferability of models from one site to another is questionable. The use of these models in road management decisions is difficult, since they are fairly complex, and require accurate material properties as input.
