AbstractIn cooperation with Federal, State, and Tribal agencies; the motor carrier industries; truck manufacturers and technology firms; shippers; and other affected parties, UGPTI intends to explore various deployment options, routes, and practices and quantify the safety, regulatory, energy, environmental, and economic impacts of autonomous trucking in rural areas. Goals of this project are to: (1) investigate potential markets for autonomous trucks in North Dakota and the region; (2) develop information to aid motor carriers in making decisions about deployment options; (3) identify optimal routes and operational practices; (4) examine permitting and safety enforcement practices; (5) identify potential barriers to the commercial adoption of autonomous trucks; (6) help prepare agencies and the traveling public for demonstrations and autonomous truck operations; and (7) facilitate revenue-service demonstrations on appropriately designed and equipped highways.
