Transportation Seminar Series
Metropolitan Freight Modeling
October 3, 2007
In recent years, there has been a concerted effort to incorporate freight models in to the transportation planning models. Despite these efforts, Freight planning models however are still in their infancy and lag behind considerably in comparison to passenger planning models. Several factors including complexity of freight movements, lack of appropriate data, and lack of qualified staff by planning agencies are advanced in the literature as the main impedance to freight travel demand modeling. An urban truck freight planning model will be developed and applied to a medium-sized MPO as the case study. This presentation is an update on current modeling efforts to develop a freight planning model for the Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area.

Diomo Motuba is a PhD Student with the TL program. He has been involved with the Travel Demand Modeling Program of the Advanced Traffic Analysis Center since May of 2004. His main areas of interests are travel demand modeling (passenger and freight), and the use of GPS technologies in transportation modeling. He is currently working on his dissertation aimed at developing a freight planning methods and procedures to forecast urban truck freight.
