Involved in transportation at legislative and business levels for more than 40 years, Johnsen has long been an advocate for transportation needs, working toward a balance between business interests and the need to preserve and rebuild infrastructure. Dick served on the Board of Directors of Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota, was president of the Bismarck Mandan Development Association, and was president of the Bismarck Mandan Chamber of Commerce. He was one of the original board members of North Dakota Workforce Safety and Insurance and served as its chairman.
