Lloyd Thompson
Lloyd Thompson is chairman of the board for Border States Paving, Inc., of Fargo.
Thompson earned a B.S. in civil engineering in 1949 from Tri-State University in Angola, Ind. Later, he worked for the North Dakota Highway Department and as a civil engineer with Twin City Testing in Grand Forks, N.D.
Between 1958 and 1973, Thompson worked for William Collins Construction Company of Fargo. During that time he founded Border States Paving and became its president in 1973. The company specializes in asphalt paving and has done a significant portion of the asphalt paving in North Dakota.
Under his direction, Border States Paving performed the first state and city asphalt recycle projects in North Dakota and was instrumental in getting the state and county road systems to use deep strength asphalt.
He was president of the Associated General Contractors in North Dakota and served on the national Associated General Contractors Board of Directors and was named a Life Director in 1994. He was also a member of the Professional Engineers and Land Surveyor's Association.
Thompson was involved in North Dakota State University through its College of Engineering and Architecture and played a key role in establishing a curriculum in construction management and engineering. He was named to the NDSU Development Foundation Board of Directors in 1985 and became its president in 1989.
In 1991, Thompson was named NDSU's Blue Key Doctor of Service, an award given annually to a person from the university or the state who has given the greatest service to NDSU. Also in 1991, he received an honorary doctorate from NDSU.
