South Dakota Test Methods Will Improve Compaction, Leading to Longer-Lasting Pavements

Posted: Nov 21, 2025

Research at South Dakota State University is leading to improved compaction of roadway base materials, resulting in time savings, safer testing procedures, and longer-lasting pavements. The researchers provided research-verified information to assist the South Dakota Department of Transportation in making decisions for updating the testing methodologies used for in-situ acceptance of the compacted granular bases. Previous testing methods were not designed for granular material or typical aggregates found in South Dakota.
