Wyoming Research Leverages AI and Traffic Cams To Develop an Automatic Road Weather System
Posted: Nov 6, 2025
Research at the University of Wyoming leveraged easily accessible data from roadside cameras to develop an affordable automatic road weather and surface condition detection system. The project’s results will help enhance the Advanced Traveler Information System by improving the identification of weather conditions using existing WYDOT infrastructure. Most U.S. departments of transportation use similar traffic cameras, so the system could be readily adopted. The research has the potential to provide more accurate and consistent weather information in real time that can be made readily available to road users and transportation agencies. The proposed models could also be used to generate temporal and spatial variations of adverse weather for optimizing maintenance vehicle routes and time.
