Posted: Oct 20, 2023

Pan Lu, a transportation researcher at North Dakota State University was recently named to rail-related committees with the Transportation Research Board and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

As a member of the committees, Lu will help identify research needs and set priorities for rail researchers across the country. Lu is an Associate Research Fellow with the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at NDSU and is also an associate professor of transportation and logistics in NDSU's College of Business.

Lu was elected as committee research coordinator for the Transportation Research Board's Highway/Rail Grade Crossings Committee, which focuses on safety, efficiency, traffic flow, and other considerations related to highway/rail grade crossings.

She was also selected as a member of the Freight and Logistics Committee of the American Society of Civil Engineers. That committee addresses all types of intermodal freight transportation and all aspects that impact freight movement such as rates, routes, and services.

Lu will also serve on the ASCE's Rail Transport Committee, which examines energy use, effective land utilization, access to city centers, environmental considerations, and other factors related to rail transportation.

"I accepted these appointments because they are closely related to my research in rail transportation and safety," Lu said. "My participation is an opportunity to contribute to the larger research community and to expand UGPTI's network for future collaboration."
