Research Aims to Improve Efficiency of Pile Driving in Mountainous Areas

Posted: Nov 22, 2022

Most bridges are supported on piles, vertical support members driven into the ground that transfer the load to the surrounding rock or soil. Researchers at the University of Wyoming are developing new analysis methods that will improve the consistency and efficiency of driving piles in intermediate geomaterials, a transitional geomaterial between soil and hard rock, often found in the Rocky Mountain region. Results from the research will improve the construction control of driven piles during construction and reduce the events of unacceptable piles, early refusal, cost overruns due to longer pile penetration, and unpredictable variation orders. The discrepancies between design and construction can be minimized.
