Improving Runoff Quality from Highway Construction Sites

MPC researchers at South Dakota State University are developing enhanced technology to improve the quality of runoff water from highway construction sites. The research promises to help maintain the quality of surface waters, promote environmental sustainability, and reduce the need for costly dredging of water systems. The research focuses on optimizing PAM flocculation, a process that uses polyacrylamide (PAM), a highly absorbent polymer that causes particles in solutions to clump together. They studied how PAM treatments function with various soil types and under various environmental conditions. The process will also improve erosion and sediment control at construction sites and reduce sediment loss.
