MPC Travel Demand Modeling to Help Planning for Tourism-Impacted Roads

With 8.5 million visitors in 2016, tourism is the second largest industry in Wyoming. Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks were among the top 10 most-visited national parks in 2016. Researchers at the University of Wyoming developed a travel demand model that incorporates tourism-based travel to accurately predict travel demand on the state's rural low-volume roads where it is expensive and impractical to use traffic-counting technology. To date, most travel demand modeling has focused on urban areas and Interstate highways.
The travel demand model will provide important information for road system planning, traffic management, road safety, maintenance, and improvements.
