This research focuses on the beneficial utilization of Spray Dryer Ash (SDA) and investigates its performance in concrete for structural and transportation applications. Based on the challenges associated with disposal of all coal ashes, and SDA in particular, and the economic and environmental costs...
The SRICOS (Scour Rates In COhesive Soils) method had been proposed as an alternative design methodology for predicting scour at bridges founded in cohesive soils. As the new method can produce substantial savings in bridge construction costs at cohesive soil sites, it is important that South Dakota...
Untreated native soil with high swell potential has been identified by the Colorado Department of Transportation as one of the major contributing factors in the development of premature longitudinal cracking and other pavement distresses in Colorado (Ardani et al. 2003). Unique regional factors such...
Recent design requirements for traffic signal and sign structures incorporated fatigue load criteria related to wind that are producing significant increases in size and cost. The Fourth Edition of the AASHTO Luminaire and Traffic Signal Specification (2002 with interims) specification is a significant...
A wood-concrete composite bridge constructed of recycled utility poles is a potentially cost effective solution to repair a portion of the 108,647 rural bridges that have been deemed functionally obsolete or structurally deficient and have a span under thirty feet in length. This research project focuses...
In October 2005, the Federal Transit Administration and the Small Urban & Rural Transit Center at North Dakota State University held a meeting with several transit industry representatives launching a project to examine the state of small transit vehicles. The scope of this paper is primarily focused...
The low mobility of seniors may be due in part to a history of auto-oriented transportation and land use policy decisions. More recently, land use policies that make it possible to drive less show promise of effectiveness for the population as a whole. However, little attention has been paid to the implications...
Animal-vehicle crashes are a concern for many areas of the country but are a particular concern for rural areas such as Wyoming. While there is considerable literature available on the effectiveness of various animal-vehicle countermeasures, such as fencing and signing, there is currently little quantifiable...
This paper evaluates the impact of various I-15 reconstruction closure scenarios on the travelers in the Ogden area. The purpose of the research was to investigate the impact of the scenarios and facilitate decisions about future maintenance of traffic during the reconstruction.
This paper presents preliminary results of the VISUM Online validation. It compares traffic conditions estimated by VISUM Online to measured data. The results show that VISUM Online produces comparable traffic measures.
