Railroad Deregulation: Impacts on Rates and Profitability
This paper examines the impacts of rail deregulation on rail rates and profitability. Many recent studies of rail deregulation seem to have lost sight of the fact that deregulation was pursued for the industry itself. Because of the fragile condition of the rail industry at the time of deregulation, it is of vital importance to investigate the change in rail profitability (and therefore viability) that took place due to deregulation.
