Railroad Economics and Management

The UGPTI's Railroad Economics and Management program is designed to examine institutional and economic issues affecting railroad operations, behavior, and efficiency. The goal of the program is to examine railroad issues that are important to transport carriers, shippers, and society, and to promote an efficient and viable rail transportation network.

Current areas of study in the program include:

  • An examination of the impacts of rail abandonment on rural shippers
  • An analysis of rail transport of western coal
  • An analysis of rail hazardous material flows in the mountain-plains region
  • An examination of technological and operational factors affecting rail efficiency
  • An analysis of the benefits and costs of intramodal competition
  • Formulation of a dynamic model of rail investment
