Title:Improving Driver Identification Data Collected for Commercial Vehicle Crash and Roadside Inspection Reports

Abstract

A periodic process has been developed to capture driver information (driver license number, state, name, date-of-birth) from roadside inspection and crash reports contained in FMCSA's Motor Carrier Management Information System. This driver data is then sent through the Commercial Driver's License Information System (CDLIS).

Each time the process is run, there are many responses (10 to 15 percent) with "no match" (i.e., the driver data were entered incorrectly, or there was not enough data). In addition to entering data incorrectly, there are other possible reasons for a non-match that are examined. Once factors are identified, ways to reduce the non-match rate are explored, and strategies are recommended that will improve the validity of driver identification data collected.
