Title:Intelligent Transportation Systems: Helping Public Transit Support Welfare to Work Initiatives
End Date:May 2002
Status:Completed

Abstract

Mobility itself and the connectivity it provides are important elements in our advanced economy and society. They are essential for the economic success and social integration of individuals. However, mobility and connectivity are at risk and in some cases absent, for rural residents. Public transportation can mitigate or eliminate this problem. The application of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies to public transportation could enhance transit by possibly increasing services and providing increased safety to the users, and also result in more efficient operations at the same time. The objective of this study is to identify the rural transit needs in the Northern Plains states and assess the application of ITS technologies to meet these needs.
