The ND 2012 deer season has 65,300 licenses available to hunters this year, 44,650 fewer than last year and the lowest since 1988. SURTC researcher Jeremy Mattson presented findings from a recent study on travel behavior and mobility of transportation disadvantaged populations, specifically older adults and people with disabilities. The study examined 2009 National Household Travel Survey data on driving, trip frequency, staying in the same place all day or week, miles driven per year, mode choice, use of public transportation, trip purpose, trip distance, and issues and concerns regarding transportation. Differences between 2001 and 2009 were documented to identify trends in travel behavior.

Lyme disease is the most commonly reported tick-borne disease in the United States. Lyme disease is passed to humans by the bite of black-legged ticks (also known as deer ticks in the eastern United States) and western black-legged ticks infected with the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi. Worksites with woods, bushes, high grass, or leaf litter are likely to have more ticks. Outdoor workers should be extra careful to protect themselves in the late spring and summer when young ticks are most active.

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless, toxic gas which interferes with the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. CO is non-irritating and can overcome persons without warning. Many people die from CO poisoning, usually while using gasoline powered tools and generators in buildings or semi-enclosed spaces without adequate ventilation.

Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, flammable, extremely hazardous gas with a "rotten egg" smell. It occurs naturally in crude petroleum and natural gas, and can be produced by the breakdown of organic matter and human/ animal wastes (e.g., sewage). It is heavier than air and can collect in low-lying and enclosed, poorly ventilated areas such as basements, manholes, sewer lines and underground telephone/electrical vaults.

"Impacts of ethanol plants on highway networks" has been published in the spring issue of the Journal of Transport and Land Use. The paper was written by Subhro Mitra, formerly of the UGPTI and now at the University of North Texas at Dallas; Alan Dybing of UGPTI; and Denver Tolliver of UGPTI. The paper describes the impacts of the ethanol industry on existing highway infrastructure in the vicinity of an ethanol production plant. Based on existing pavement condition and the incremental traffic changes, the funds required to maintain the affected roads at their present service levels are quantified.

The NDDOT Support Center (DOTSC) at North Dakota State University will celebrate its 10th anniversary with an open house on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the lower level of Hastings Hall on the NDSU campus. NDDOT, UGPTI and NDSU officials as well as staff and students will be on hand to celebrate. DOT Director Francis Ziegler and NDSU President Dean Bresciani will be present to sign an updated partnership statement. The Paul Abrahamson and Transportation Engineering Scholarships are being offered to NDSU students through the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute. These scholarships are offered annually, and are funded by the Mountain-Plains Consortium. Interested students should be juniors and seniors interested in transportation and who exhibit academic excellence. Two students will be selected for each scholarship worth $1500 per academic year.

The scholarship application deadline is quickly approaching. Applications are due Mar. 24, 2010.
